Where is Cyprus?

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia. Geographically Cyprus belongs to the Middle East. However, because historically, culturally and economically Cyprus has links with Europe and especially with Greece, it is considered also as a part of the West and Europe. It is now considered the south-eastern end of the European Union and of Europe as a whole.

Where to go in Cyprus?

Nicosia

Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and is called the last divided capital. It is a city with character we would say as it combines high standards of megalopolis without the craziness of the big cities with the beauty of the old historic city behind walls that have endured a lot through the decades. Ledra Street is only the beginning  for exploring Nicosia’s old town. Old Nicosia is a diamond in the center of the island with all its well preserved little and colorful alleys full of traditional buildings and small artistic cafes. Parks, artistic cafes, family friendly sidewalks and elements of British influence make up the capital’s backdrop.

Nicosia for us means Old Town, colorful doors, well-maintained alleys, taverns with traditional music and a small dose of old times…

Limassol

Limassol is the definition of a big modern city as it will soon be described as the Dubai of the Mediterranean sea, because of the reconstruction of skyscrapers and large resorts which moves very fast. A strong economy with tourists coming mainly from Russia, it has become the ultimate destination for Russian tourists. Similarly speaking of business, we would say that it is beyond business friendly mainly towards Arab and Russian-sourced businesses. The marina, the palm trees and the deck stand out and gain the attention of the visitor as they are not just reminiscent of any island but a developed seaside resort as well.

Larnaca

Larnaca is a small diamond in the province of Cyprus. A city that hosts the main airport of Cyprus nowadays and which is the closest choice for sea escapes from Nicosia especially at the beach area called Mackenzie. The other area that stands out in Larnaca is the Finikoudes a long beach that extends to a huge coastal area and ideal spot for cycling and walking. Several historic points of interest can be found walking through the city just a few steps from the beach.

Paphos

Paphos is definitely a city with many attractions. Sightseeing, historic attractions, picturesque architecture and touristic mood. One of the largest cities in Cyprus was once the center of worship of the Goddess Aphrodite. Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa, Protaras and Paralimni are the favorite areas for every tourist and for the locals as well in the summer months. Party, baths, dancing and pleasant summer mood. Wake up early enough in order to catch up the sunbeds, because after 9 a.m. the beaches are really full of people. One of the most beautiful beaches we have seen, with crystal waters and many protected areas around it is Cavo Greco, but for us it is not like the ideal option in the summer. The area is full of touristic resorts and we would prefer that you visit it off season!

The Akamas peninsula

The Akamas peninsula is one of the most beautiful places in Cyprus. Our favorite one for sure.. Natura protected area, with wild beaches, warm waters, off road driving, gorges and newborn turtles! Lovely route that reaches the beach of Lara quite easily with a conventional car (you can also rent a special vehicle to get there) and top proposal from us the food at the canteen that you will find on the end of beach of Lara. After the Rock Restaurant just keep on driving and you ll get there. The best food  you’ve ever tasted with 10€ per person with salad and beer by the sea!

The mountain villages of Cyprus are the most incredible villages you ll ever see and we guarantee that! Unique villages with picturesque cobblestone streets and many ancient churches for you to explore. Hiking enthusiasts will find wonderful nature trails and international European trails that end in Troodos mountain. With perfect marking and landscape surprises during the route such as green lakes, waterfalls and dams. Possibility of camping in places (e.g. Adventure park), great food and endless village hopping!

Few words about Mountainous Arcadia

The mountainous Arcadia is located on the western side of the Arcadia region. Located in the center of Peloponnese, is just 200 km from Athens. There you will find picturesque villages such as Stemnitsa, Dimitsana and Karitaina which are also one the most famous villages in the area. You will also find the Mainalo mountain, which is 1981 meters high. It is a historical area as it is contributed substantially to the struggle of the Greek war of indepedence of 1821.

What to see in Mountainous Arcadia

When you travel to arcadia you will find many sightseeing places of interest during driving. As the main sightseeings of the area we stand out…

Water power Museum

The open-air water power museum belongs to the cultural foundation of piraeus group.  In this museum you can discover the technology used by the region’s traditional communities as early on as the 16th century in order to cover their basic needs. You will find a powder, which made the gunpowder for the revolution, tannery, water friction and watermill. Details of the museum’s operation can be found here.  

Dimitsana Library

The library of Dimitsana was founded in 1764 and until 1821 it was enriched with 5,000 books, a huge number for the time. After the 1826, only 600 books were rescued after using the paper to make cartridges for the fights, during Greek war of indepedence.

Ski resort in Mainalo

Ancient Gortys

Ancient Gortys is one of the most important Arcadian cities of the ancient world and its heyday is placed in the 4th century BC. It was one of the stations on the route followed by spartan athletes on their way to compete in the Olympics. Races, as the ancient road Olympia – Megalopolis – Mycenae – Isthmus – Athens passed through here.

Philosopher’s monastery

The philosopher’s monastery is located in the ravine of the River Lousios, south of Dimitsana. The old monastery is also known as the “Hidden School”, because according to tradition it operated there during the Turkish occupation school which later developed into a great seminary. 

Prodromos Monastery

The Monastery of Prodromos is located between the villages of Stemnitsa and Dimitsana. It is built at the root of a steep rock in The Lousios River, near the philosopher monastery. It was founded in the 4th century and is one of the most beautiful monasteries of the Peloponnese. 

4+1 Picturesque Villages

In the area there are many picturesque villages which worth be visiting. We present to you the ones we like dthe most during trekking in the area, which you can also see easily via google earth:

Dimitsana

It is a very beautiful stone village that is well worth giving from your time. At the entrance of the village you will find an old third bridge. You should also definitely visiti Agia Kiriaki, a Greek orthodox church. Agia Kiriaki is a single-aisled basilica with a dome covered with copper leaves, built in 1834. Close to it you will find the Public Library and the School.  Finally, in the village there is also the open-air museum of water power.   

Stemnitsa

In Stemnitsa you will wander in very beautiful alleys. You will find, today’s ruined, impressive four-storey tower house of Roilos, the mansion of Bourazos and the church of “Panagia in Stemnitsa” with the characteristic bell. Finally, in the castle of Stemnitsa you will admire the amazing view of the village.

Karitaina

It stands out the castle, also known as the “Toledo of Greece”, built in the 13th century. Karytaina is a proclaimed traditional settlement, as it retains the color of the medieval castle town. It has an amazing view and definitely deserves your attention. On the banks of the River Alfios is the bridge of Koukos. It was built in 1880, it is a one-arched and its height is 34 meters. 

Vytina

A very beautiful little village with traditional small square. If you want to go to the Mainalo ski resort Vytina is a good choice, since it is nearby. If you are looiking for an instagrammable place you should go through the “love raod”, for a photo.

Places to stay in Arcadia

You can travel to Mountainous Arcadia just for one day but we think that is better to stay for a couple of days instead. Throughout the area you will find many traditional guesthouses and picturesque hotels for a pleasant stay available for all bugdets. We preferred to stay in Dimitsana, Stemnitsa and Karitaina for one night at each accommodation. But we could also stay in one of the villages we described above as the distances are short and pleasant.

What to do – activities

If you prefer outdoor experiences and activities, Arcadia is one of the best places to do so, close to Athens. There you will find many long and short hiking trails. We enjoyed, as a short and easy route the path that starts from Ancient Gortys and ends after one and a half kilometres in the carved on the rock Monastery of Prodromos, following the flow of Lucius river and passing next to old watermills and over Bridges. You can also go rafting on the Lousios River and enjoy all its magic.

Hiking and rafting are the best choices for outdoor experience in mountainous Arcadia

In Arcadia you will find amazing Greek traditinal food. There are great taverns and resaturants and we sugeest that you visit some of themduring your visit to Arcadia:

Kalavrita and History

Kalavrita is located on Mount Helmos in the region of Achaia, 190 km from Athens. It is a historical village both for the actions took place there during the Greek war of independence, as well as for its modern history. Kalavrita was one of the regions of Greece that experienced nazi German retaliation in the harshest way during the Occupation (Massacre of Kalavryta December 13, 1943).

Museum of the Kalavryta Holocaust

The Museum of the Kalavryta Holocaust is located in the primary school. It is a symbolic building for the inhabitants of the city as they met and suffered the brutality of the Nazi atrocity. You certainly have to visit it, for details visit the official website of this historical museum.

Place of sacrifice of Kalavryta

Within walking distance from the city, just 500 meters, on the hill Kapi, is the spot at which all the men from 14 years old were led by the Germans, where they were executed. Today there is a great cross reminiscent of the Kalavrita massacre.

Kalavrita Ski Resort

There are a total of eight (8) lifts and fourteen (14) slopes that include all difficulty levels, total length 25 km. You can also enjoy your coffee in the ski chalet.

Cave of the lakes

The Cave of the Lakes is considered unique in the world, since it has 13 successive scaled lakes. The exploited length of the cave is 500 m while its total length is 1,980 m. You will enter the cave from an artificial tunnel that leads directly to the second floor from a total of three. The crossing of the ponds is made by raised artificial bridges. Petimeza Tower

Between Kalavrita and the cave of the lakes you will find the famous Tower of Petimeza. The tower is located in an elevated position in Kato Lousous and is maintained in good condition. It is one of the oldest towers of the mountainous Peloponnese (17th century) and is a characteristic example of fortified housing

Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra

Historical monastery, where the banner of the Revolution of 1821 was raised. It was built in the 10th century and in 1585 it was destroyed, when the decline of the monastery began. Successive disasters followed and in the early 19th century it was rebuilt.

How to get there – odontotos rack railway

The easiest way to get there is by car, because this will help you visiting the places around the village. Another way is by Odontotos train. Using odontotos train is a unique experience, and not unfairly it has become a tourist attraction. The train starts from Diakopto and the route is trully unique. It lasts about an hour and crosses the gorge of Vouraikos, passes through the village of Zachlorou and ends in Kalavryta. The 22 km/h journey takes place at a speed ranging from 30 to 40 km/h on the single line and from 6 to 15 km/h on the barbed track. The railway network is serrated in the places where due to the morphology of the ground there are large slopes. For ticket info and train timetable press here.

Where to Stay?

Although the region of Kalavrita is close to Athens and you could come for just one day but… we think that is better to spend more days in Kalavrita village. We stayed two nights in the center of the village. You will find a lot of traditional hostels and picturesque houses to stay in, depending on your preferences. 

Things to do in Kalavrita – activities

You will find a lot of activites around the kalavrita village!!! … skiing, hiking and of course the odontotos train are some of them. We recommend the descent of the Gorge of Vouraikos. It is a route along the path that follows exactly the jagged! A really great route, regardless of whether you are a hiking enthusiast.

Where to eat

The food is unique, traditional and you will definitely enjoy it whatever your choice. We stood out and recommend: 

• The tavern “Romanzo” in Zachlorou
• “Peri orekseos” in Kalavrita
• The tavern “Varvitsiotis” in Kalavrita

To begin with let’ s start our trip travellers!  Travel in Italy is probably on the top of the travellers’ bucketlists all over the world! Why is Italy so popular among travellers? What makes Italy stand out? Its history, its architecture, its finesse, its food… or alltogether? Everything in Italy is about classy stylish italian vibes! We love travelling in Italy beacuse its easy, its affordale for all types of travellers, itsboth colourful and authentic at the same time and there are numerous cities one can visit.

Generally speaking let’ s see some tips and advice:

• Try the famous Italian food whether its for a pizza or a fancy restaurant (pizzas and pasta everywhere)

How to travel Italy by car – Rent a car or not?

Given these points what about using a car for your travel in Italy. The easiest way to travel in Italy is to explore the whole country from north to south or via versa by renting a car. It is an easy process since it is a very touristic country, really friendly to tourists. The options are many but of course we will recommend that you rent from an internationally recognized car company. Important notice before each car rental, read the fine print and check the car thoroughly before picking it up looking up for any damage.

Finally keep in mind that in some areas it is not advisable to travel by car such as the Cinque Terre area, for example (in our italian riviera blog post we share all info about how to move by train there), but it is certainly the ideal way if you want to visit many italian cities in a few days.

Travel Italy packages

Although Italy is considered and not unfairly an expensive country for the tourists, there is a wide variety of travel packages on the internet. Great competition means fairly low prices. What we want to tell you is that with a good search you will definitely find a cheap package either it is for a group trip or a personalised trip made specially for you. The good thing about travel packages is that you save yourself time and effort especially if you are not yet a very experienced traveler. Prices vary and naturally they depend on the type of traveler you are. Certainly a luxury trip to Porto Fino with central lodge at the coast costs much more than staying outside the Cinque Terre area for example in La Spezia.

Although travelling there is totally safe in general, always check for any travel advice and guidelines by local and international authorities especially in case like the unlike event of something bad is happening as the whole Covid 19 thing that is all aorund. The capital city of the USA can be described as a huge museum free to the public and open to its visitors. Anywhere you walk Washington reveals its power and amazes its visitors by all means!  The city is devided into seveal districts but we visited only some of them, including the city center where all locals and national authorities are located and  Bethesda a suburb in Washington!

Vibrant and youthful Wahington DC offers a fantastic blend of world class museums top rated restaurants, and endless options! Spend a day exploring the free museums of the Smithsonian institute! If you visit on spring dont miss the National cherry blossom festival!

Having only 2 days available we had to rush a lot in order to make the most of our staying there! Thankfully we had the most amazing cousin and his adorable family over there who made our visit incredible and our experience unforgettable!

Best way to explore Washington

The best way to explore Wahington is on foot, by bike or scooter! The choice is up to you! It is for sure that the whole area is really huge so 2 days of walking could be exhausting for some, while for others may be the perfect way not to miss a single thing! Try both walking and cycling! Jump bikes and scooters can be found everywhere make it the most convenient way to move around! Last but not least we always use Uber, you know that, just like the americans do!

• Extra tip Book any extra tickets prior arrival  even if its for free (eg. US Capitol free entrance and guided tours are offered throughout the day between 8.40am – 3.20 pm Monday to Saturday, but tour passes are required).
• Extra tip Be in line early or late enough because the queues are really long there.

Main attractions of the park include the Ramble and Lake; several amusement attractions including Wollman Rink, Central Park Carousel, and the Central Park Zoo; Sheep Meadow; the Central Park Mall; Bethesda Terrace; the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir; and the Delacorte Theater that hosts Shakespeare in the Park programs in the summertime. 23 Chrysler building The Chrysler Building was the first supertall building taking the title of World’s Tallest Building after winning a height battle with The Bank of Manhattan. It lost the title of World’s Tallest Building 11 months later to the Empire State Building but enjoyed commercial success due to its location next to Grand Central Terminal. How much does a trip to New York cost?

This is a bit of a issue for many, as the cost cannot be kept at very low levels by having inflexible costs that cannot be avoided and are particularly high. Air tickets, accommodation, sightseeing, entertainment, travel, food, visa is the descending order of all costs not including any of your shopping purchases of course! We spent about 1800 euros for 7 days for 2 persons (per 2 persons: airtickets and visa 300 euro, accommodation: 600 euro, sightseeing: 300euro, transformation including to and from airport and to and from Washington DC: 250 euro, fast food, beers, souvenirs & rest: 350euro). But again is not a normal price, so don’t be alarmed by your credit card account when you finally see it after your trip! Our advice is try to find cheap airtickets! From Cairo to Alexandria

We started our adventure at 6.00 in the morning when we departed from the central train station of Cairo and had Alexandria as the desination stop. For our adventure with the train and practical advice in order to avoid finding yourself into unexpected surprises check out our post! At 9.20 in the morning we arrived in Alexandria where we would meet our friend Mohammed to guide us in his beautiful home city.

Alexandria in one day

Just outside the train station, Mohammed was waiting for us. Mohammed is one of the most pleasant and friendly people we have ever met during our travels and was born in Alexandria. Mohammed has also visited many times Greece and he even studied linguistics and philosophy in Thessaloniki and speaks the Greek language too! Hes definetely our new beloved and most respected friend!

The Roman theatre located just outside the train station!

A quiet archeological site that looks almost familiar due to its greek architecture and worth a visit. Do not forget to see the Amphitheatrical Theatre, the sculptures that were excavated from the depths of the Mediterranean sea, perhaps remainings of the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria – Faros of Alexandria, and the mosaic floors of the urban “city” that stood there once.

Agios Savvas Church

It is a Greek Orthodox church in the center of Alexandria. Before entering the temple area you will see the statue of Archbishop Makarios.

The Holy Cathedral Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos

It is a three-aisled basilica built in the middle of the 19th century in Alexandria, Egypt. Ecclesiastical church belongs to the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. The church belongs to the Greek community of Alexandria.

Alexandria corniche

The wonderful corniche of Alexandria with the characteristic fishing boats reminiscent of our beloved Thessaloniki (in a much larger version of course). A beautiful bay in the Mediterranean Sea where you have to walk and imagine while looking towards the place where it is said that the lighthouse of Alexandria stood, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world! If you walk along the seaside you will meet the café where Kavafis used to hang out and many Greek inscriptions!

The fort of Qaitbay

Towards the end of the beach of Alexandria is the fort of Qaitbay which is said to have been built from the ruins of Faros. A characteristic monument visible from afar, it is worth visiting especially to enjoy the views it offers.

The architecture of the Islamic mosques is well known to all of us, but this mosque has Moroccan-Spanish style, or Andalusian as well! Right next to the mosque there is the palace which consists of similar style vibes! The ladies should not forget to take with them something to cover their head to enter the amazing mosque!

Stop for lunch

We are at the end of the wonderful tour of Mohammed and its time for some food, isnt it? Don’t hesitate to ask for a lunch break! The flavors will delight you! Dolmas, stuffed pigeon, kebab, steaks, hummus, pigeon soup and much more. Ask for a refreshing lemonade with mint after the lunch to reflresh yourself   and continue to the last  stop of the day tour which is not other than the famous library of Alexandria.

The Library of Alexandria – Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Another one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world is in Alexandria. The huge in size and variety of library books is located at the point where the old one was standing! Many myths and stories around its name and greatness! Unique experience, in a modern space, full of students, museums, exhibitions and countless books! Respect the space that is interesting in terms of architectural point and  imagine how was once the ancient library! In the courtyard of the library you will find the statue built in honor of Alexander the Great and right at the inside entrance of the library the statue of Demetrius Falireus the inspirer of the creation of the old library.

The end of the one-day adventure in Alexandria

Jerusalem is a city that is on the east side of Israel. It’s considered to be… The Mecca of Christianity! The Holy land for Christian believers! There lies the most important “symbol ” of Christianity, the Church of Holy Sepulcher. Bethlehem is a small town located only 15 minutes from Jerusalem by car. It is known all over the world because it is the place where Jesus Christ was born at the Church of Nativity. Of course it has too many points of interest amd the most interesting fact is perhaps that Bethlehem is located in Palestinian territories… Crossing the borders of Palestine with a passport, of course, you enter another world and you cannot keep away any emotions when you see the wall that is built along the Palestinian territories by Israel.
