Are you travelling in Greece and staying for a few days in Athens? If the answer is yes, then we have the best proposal for a short one day getaway from Athens, while exploring three wonderful islands of Saronic gulf without having to pay a fortune!!

Our proposal? One day cruise to Saronic Gulf (Hydra, Poros, Aegina islands)! We chose the travel agency Signature travel for the tickets and we can say with absolute certainty that it is the best value for money gateaway from Athens! We have written about our love for the islands of Argosaronikos Gulf in a previous post and there’s no doubt that this one-day cruise to three of these picteresque islands is something we seek to do every year!

First stop: Hydra island

Hydra is the island of captains, history and artists while it is considered to be more cosmopolitan than the other ones, personally speaking it is our favorite island! We love it for its picturesqueness and its trademark the beautiful cute little donkeys that welcome you at the port! How did we pass our time there? In the two hours we had at our disposal we started our tour at Hydroneta! Favorite spot for diving into the blue sea and take some unique photos! We had a cup coffee at the cafe Papagalosa and then we headed to the colourful port and got lost in the beautiful narrow valleys of the island. Somewhere between the straits we met some more donkeys, the historical pharmacy that has its origins in 1890 and the bakery of the port where you can find great pastries! In the port we do not missed to visit the shop of Elena Votsi, who designed the Olympic medal of 2004, from where we bought some souvenirs! Finally, we passed a quick visit to the Historic Museum of Hydra and we relaxed to enjoy the view from the monument of Andreas Miaoulis!

hydra nonstoptravellers

Second stop: Poros

Poros is a quiet island, peaceful, without strange exaggerations, ideal for the most romantic ones! We love it for its neoclassical clock that dominates the rock at Chora and stands out from the very first moment the boat enters the bay and of course for its green color as it is an island full of pines and trees. How did we pass our time there? In about one hour we had the opportunity to take a romantic walk through the beautiful narrow streets of Chora, to take some photos at the squares of Iroon (Heroes), Karamanou and Koryzi and to enjoy greek mezes with tsipouro (trust us and order these!) in front of the incredible sea view!

ΥΔΡΑ discovergreece.com

Third stop: Aegina

Aegina island, was the first capital of Greece (after the Revolution of 1821) and we love it for its history, the fresh fish and of course the “fruit” of the island which are the yummy pistachios. How did we pass our time there? In Aegina we were able to stay for two hours so as the boat arrived, we disembarked and ran for a swim in Avra beach (the closest one)! Then we started a walk in the beloved narrow valleys! Colorful streets, blooming flowers, hospitable locals are just a few of the elements of the beautiful Aegina that make us visit it every year! Arriving at the Metropolis church of the island we returned from the port side this time so that we could enjoy both the boats from the one side of the street and the horse wagons as well on the other! Before our final departure we did not missed to try ice cream with flavor of what else? Pistachios! Wonderful and refreshing!

hydra arttable.gr greece island

At around 20.00 in the afternoon…

The one-day getaway to the Saronic Gulf has comes to an end, the staff of the ship greeted us with smiles and kindness and we returned home from a day full of dreamy images with a feeling that we had just returned from a whole week excursion! We highly recommend the one-day cruise with Signature travel, and even though we travel as a couple, we have to admit that this excursion is very family friendly, i.e. ideal for families who travel with children!

Can a movie liven up an island? When we talk about Mamma Mia and Skopelos, it’s probably already done! A film that became a huge success in 2008 and is now coming back with its sequel, inspired thousands of tourists to visit the Sporades Islands and especially skopelos fortunately without negatively affecting the quality offered by these islands in summer months to their guests!

With summer images, stars of Hollygood and the music sounds of Abba the image of the Greek island Kalokairi, travels around the world! The film was mainly made in Skopelos, Skiathos and Pelion (Damouchari)! See the spots where the shooting took place:

Skopelos

At Kastani Beach

In and around Glisteri Island

In Agios Ioannis in Kastri

Skiathos

In the old port next to the picturesque Bourtzi

In Agios Nikolaos

Pelion-Volos

In Damouchari in Mouresi

After the first movie in 2008 the press wrote:

It’s clear that life will never be quites the same again for the 4.969 skopelites.

A few words about Skopelos island

Skopelos is a beautiful green island and belongs to the northern Sporades. It is definitely what we would call an alternative island for holidays and vacations, since it maintains its beauty and serenity intact and of course its traditional character!

The beaches on the north and east side of Skopelos are rocky, while in the south and west the slopes create the beautiful green beaches of the island. On the south side are the most of the beaches located: Stafylos, Velanio, Agnontas, Limnonari, Panormos, Antrines, Milia, Ratchet, Elios, Armenopetra, Agios Ioannis in Kastri and many others, “drowned” in the green of the pine forests.

Accommodation

Do you want feel like the movie star of Mamma Mia? If the answer is yes, all you have to do is stay in the place where your favorite actors stayed, or you can even have your wedding on the beautiful island!

Access

The island does not have an airport, so the options are via ferry from Thessaloniki, Athens or Skiathos and by plane through Skiathos!

Our proposal

The island has a wonderful camping, so nature lovers have only to choose this campsite for their stay!

With sunshine around 300 days per year, Kalamata, the capital city of Messinia, is an exciting all seasons city break. A place where thousands of years of history, philosophy, culture, science, arts and politics blend beautifully with the modern, cosmopolitan and vivid life. Kalamata is the second-largest city in the Peloponnese and chief port of the Messinia regional unit, which lies along the Nedontas river.

History

Built on the site of ancient Pharai, the city took its modern name from a miracle-working icon of the Virgin Mary known as kala matia (good eyes). It was discovered in the stables of an Ottoman aga (governor), who became a Christian as a miracle. The icon now resides inside the city’s oversized cathedral, the Church of Ypapanti.

Down town

Below the city’s castle, the small but attractive old town is located, a favorite meeting place for young people, because here is concentrated the nightlife (in winter). Old town was almost totally destroyed by the Turks during the War of Independence, rebuilt by French engineers in the 1830s, then levelled again by an earthquake in 1986. A lively Saturday food market at the old town is waiting for the visitors to try traditional products such us Kalamata olives, pasteli, olive oil etc.

Walk to find its castle and places of interests such us the hall that hosts every summer the prestigious International Dance Festival. The castle with the panoramic view is built on the site of the acropolis of Faron. Constructed in the 13th century by William Villehardouin and underwent subsequent additions and alterations by the Venetians and Turks. At the foot of the castle lies the church of Ag. Ioannis which dates back to the post-Byzantine times. Visit the cathedral of the Visitation-Ypapanti (1873), the monastery of nuns (12th c.), the Byzantine church of the Agioi Apostoloi (13th c.), which received special historical value as here was celebrated the first thanksgiving in liberated Kalamata on March 23, 1821.

The shadow of Taygetos mountain, the endless olive groves touching the shore and an endless beach with beautiful paint colors is the charismatic state of this city. After liberated from the Turks, thanks to the products of the fertile Messinian land (olive oil, raisins, figs, etc.), Kalamata became a rich urban center and important port.

The old Town Hall, the Gallery of Contemporary Greek Art, with paintings, sculptures and engravings, the Archaelogical Museum with finds dating from the Bronze Age to the Roman period, the Folklore and Historical Museum with traditional items, local costumes and relics from Greek Revolution of 1821, the municipal theater and Railway Park where exposed old engines and railroad cars, the meeting of residents and visitors walking point is the spacious central King George Square. From here starts the pedestrian part of the main road Aristomenous where you can find many shops and cafés. The district developed around the picturesque railway station with pedestrian network, small coffee bars and taverns. One of the gifts of Kalamata, is the huge beach (4km), clean waters (blue flag). The beach stretches along the boulevard Navarinou and is one of the most beautiful places in the city to walk or ride a bike. On the western beach there is a remarkable marina town with many tourist facilities, cafes and restaurants.

They have been called Seychelles of Greece, the Bahamas of Greece, paradise and many other great things! There have not yet been overcrowded by tourists, somewhere you’ ve heard them and they are definitely on your bucketlist of summer destinations in Greece! So for you who have not visited yet Lichadonisia islands read our article and fly to Lichadonisia!

So let’s meet the exotic Lichadonisia!

Lichadonisia, or Lichades, is a complex of seven or more small islands and islets in the northwest of Evia. They are located in the Sea area where you join the northern Evoikos Gulf with Maliakos and its on the opposite of Kamena Vourla.

Lichadonisia formed after volcanic activity while a large part of the islands sank from an earthquake in 426 B.C. their name came from Lichas, the servant of Hercules, who handed him the tunic of Deianeira, according to mythology and because when Hercules held him responsible for the tunic, hurled him to the sea. From the pieces and his blood were formed the Lichades islands!

Some of the names of the islets are Monolia and the Vagia as well as other smaller called Pontikonisi.

How to get to Lichadonisia.

During the summer season there are daily and weekend itineraries from the port of Kamena Vourla Fthiotida. You can choose a boat with glass bottom and there is usually a mini tour performed by the Captain! Also ask about the beaches where every boat leaves you because the first one is always so full of people that you can hardly enjoy the scenery!

From Kamena Vourla: The start of the routes to and from the Lichadonisia started on June 9, 2018 from the port of Kamena Vourla.

Timetable: take off 12:00 return 18:00 ticket prices 12.00 Euro adults and 6.00 euro children.

Itineraries are also operated from the beach of Kavos Lihada of North Evia, upon telephone contact – ticket prices 6.00 Euro adults and free for children.

The visit to the beach of Lichadonisiwn can be done by Kamena Vourla, with the boats “Lihadonisia i ” and “Lihadonisia II ” or from Kavos (Evia) with the boats “I saw it all ” and “I saw all II “, the use of umbrellas is free of charge, upon availability for the duration of your stay, if you are visiting the Lihadonisia with the specific boats.

Tip 1: Meet the permanent residents of Lihadonisia who are not other than the wonderful seals of monachus- monachus who live permanently in these waters!

Tip 2: Because for some of you the prices might seem a little bit exaggerated… You can take with you your umbrella and fridge with the necessary respect and discretion always!

Tip 3: Don’t miss the shipwreck…

The paradox of Lichadonisia

These islands turned into a popular tourist destination in recent years, certainly not unjustified. On the other hand, however, the impression that the islets will derive depends on ones initial expectations. Eg. Ok… It is something beautiful and different, ideal for one-day excursions, but come on…its not Seychelles!!!

Consider it as a short getaway and travel experience filled with people who enjoy the crystal clear waters and the incredible beauty of the landscape (when not overcrowded). The area is also available for snorkeling, water sports and scuba diving. Every place has its own beauty and it is good to feel it that way!

After all, the final impressions are only yours!!!

The city of Athens constitutes a puzzle of smaller areas that compose the magic that characterizes this city. Antiquity, tradition and history meets modern, contemporary and future. Pedestrian streets, people, shops, taverns, colors, flavors, images … there are not enough words to describe each of these neighborhoods mentioned below. But it is for sure that each of them has something unique that magnetizes travellers and locals, invites you to discover them, provides security, its in walking distance as well as associated with the transportation and of course worth visiting! Enjoy!

1. Plaka – Anafiotika

Definetely the most alluring district of Athens! The best neighborhood to start your visit in Athens city! Check out my older post about Plaka, the “Neighborhood of the Gods”. It is named like this due to its proximity to the Acropolis and its many archaeological sites. The whole area is built on top of the residential areas of the ancient town of Athens. Plaka is the old historical neighborhood of Athens clustered around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis, incorporating labyrinthine streets and neoclassical architecture. The area of Plaka is one of the most attractive districts of Athens as there you can find amazing testaurants, cafes, music, friendly people and amazing small tourist shops to get your souvenirs. For the photolovers Plaka is an ideal inspirational place to take great and colourful photos!

2. Monastiraki – Thiseio

Monastiraki is a famous district of Athens that extends from the Monastiraki square at the end of Athinas street until Thiseio. It is one of the best places to buy just about anything at the Flea Market at Monastiraki especially on Sunday when some of the stores close and people bring tables and carpets and sell all kinds of stuff from junk to antiques. You will find clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and specialty stores. Also Monastiraki is a major tourist attraction in Athens which is named after Monastiraki Square, which in turn is named for the Church of Pantanassa that is located within the square. Thiseio is an area which has many cafés and cultural meeting pointsis surrounded by hills, heights and historical sites which are within a walking distance. The Ancient Agora, Stoa of Attalos, the Temple of Hephastus and Kerameikos Archaeological Museum can be entered from Thiseio while all others: the National Observatory, Acropolis, Philopappos Monument, Pnyx Hill which is considered the birthplace of Democracy and the Mount Lycabettus can be easily reached or viewed from Thiseio. The panoramic views of them and their natural surroundings from the Areopagus height are spectacular, especially by night. Try a romantic night walk under the athenian sky!

It is the historic center and the backbone of ancient Athens, where today takes place all political, economic and social life of the country. The historic center follows the modern trend of returning to the center which resulted in the transformation of the city center into a metropolitan district. The area is full of hotels, airbnbs, it hosts the largest part of entertainment and fun of the city. Accessibility is easy since there are three metro stops, one train stop, its the starting point of all three routes of trams, bus lines 130, 12 trolleybus lines. From Ermou street with the varius department stores to the Panathenaic Stadium, University and Monastiraki district, historic center is one of the most complete and commercial areas of the city. What about culture? 7 cinemas, 10 theaters and many artistic cafes which host cultural events. Uncountable bars, cafés, food places and clubs. Famous city pins are the Constitution Square, Kapnikarea church (square) , Karytsi Square, Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, Ermou Street. Dont forget to vitis Square Saint Irene the latest “talk of the town” and definetely check in at National Garden, Zappeion Hall, and Acropolis hill.

The district of Kerameikos consists of Gkazi, Metaxourgeio and Votanikos, and its a big area in the center of Athens that remains authentic, artistic and genuine. A charmingly poorly lit area, with narrow pedestrian streets, full of shops waiting for you to discover them. These areas have something real, something that reminds us of old neighborhoods while encounter modern industrial style perfectly and coexist harmoniously, giving life in this ‘degraded’ neighborhood. This renovated former industrial area hosts art galleries, museums, many cultural events throughout the year, cafes, bars, clubs and shops with Greek folk music. A trademark of the region post-industrial design associations.

5. Koukaki- Dourgouti

The district Koukakis (or just Koukaki) located on the southeastern side of the Filopappos Hill in Athens. It borders the regions of Petralona, Neos Kosmos (photos taken from Neos Kosmos – Dafni hill) and Acropolis. Imposing neoclassical next to sweetest houses. Alternative bars next to gourmet restaurants. Levantine taverns next to authentic Greek Myers. Groups with bicycles. Older couples catching table in the pedestrian zone and watch the world goes by. Tourists come from Dionysius Areopagite pedestrian street, neoclassical mansions beside the last remaining houses. Koukaki has two main pedestrian streets with plenty of cafes, bars, restaurants, grills etc. to serve residents and tourists from hotels around the Acropolis. In a walking distance to Koukaki you can visit Dourgouti area in Neos Kosmos district, which i trully love and suggest, but i will write about it in a special post dedicated to Dourgouti. Stay tuned!

You can walk the neighborhoods of Upper and Lower Petralona and discover numerous shops to eat and drink … low budgetly. Walk the Troon street, especially on summer days, you will be thrilled by the locals, the tastes, the smells and the music!

Its near the city center, full of good apartments, close to the National Research Foundation, the Panathenaic Stadiumand the Rizari street.

One of the oldest districts of Athens, hosts the beautiful neoclassical buildings, the majority of student world, and is also a meeting place of artists. In Exarchia you can find a large number of clubs and bars with rock music. Most of them are around Exarchia Square and at the foot of the Hill of Strefi. Nearby are the most classic and old bookstores of Athens and there are even three cinemas and two theaters.

This does not mean that the kolonaki is limited only to these options. In the area there are plenty of impressive clubs with dance music typically align their musical choices with London and New York. Kolonaki is a classic choice for all ages. The most famous bar and clubs are concentrated in the streets Haritos, Lucian, Plutarch, Skoufas and around Kolonaki Square.

This resulted in the doubling of the population and the building of more open spaces. Despite the doubling of the municipality, Nea Smyrni is a region with great standards (layout, green, transport). Still, its trademark, the square remains a magnet and attracts a large proportion of young people of the southern suburbs and other central areas such as Kallithea, Koukaki and the Neos Kosmos. The main hot spot of Nea Smyrni is its Park where people of all ages do gymnastics all day long!

Square Mavili hosts some of the oldest bars of Athens and of course the famous Canteen of Mavili which since 1989 serves clubbers, doctors (there aree many hospitals in the area), passengers etc..for all night long.
