Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia. Geographically Cyprus belongs to the Middle East. Nicosia

Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and is called the last divided capital. It is a city with character we would say as it combines high standards of megalopolis without the craziness of the big cities with the beauty of the old historic city behind walls that have endured a lot through the decades. Ledra Street is only the beginning  for exploring Nicosia’s old town. Old Nicosia is a diamond in the center of the island with all its well preserved little and colorful alleys full of traditional buildings and small artistic cafes. Parks, artistic cafes, family friendly sidewalks and elements of British influence make up the capital’s backdrop.

Limassol

Limassol is the definition of a big modern city as it will soon be described as the Dubai of the Mediterranean sea, because of the reconstruction of skyscrapers and large resorts which moves very fast. A strong economy with tourists coming mainly from Russia, it has become the ultimate destination for Russian tourists. Similarly speaking of business, we would say that it is beyond business friendly mainly towards Arab and Russian-sourced businesses. The marina, the palm trees and the deck stand out and gain the attention of the visitor as they are not just reminiscent of any island but a developed seaside resort as well.

Larnaca

Larnaca is a small diamond in the province of Cyprus. A city that hosts the main airport of Cyprus nowadays and which is the closest choice for sea escapes from Nicosia especially at the beach area called Mackenzie. The other area that stands out in Larnaca is the Finikoudes a long beach that extends to a huge coastal area and ideal spot for cycling and walking. Several historic points of interest can be found walking through the city just a few steps from the beach.

Paphos

Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa, Protaras and Paralimni are the favorite areas for every tourist and for the locals as well in the summer months. Party, baths, dancing and pleasant summer mood. Wake up early enough in order to catch up the sunbeds, because after 9 a.m. the beaches are really full of people. One of the most beautiful beaches we have seen, with crystal waters and many protected areas around it is Cavo Greco, but for us it is not like the ideal option in the summer. The area is full of touristic resorts and we would prefer that you visit it off season!

The Akamas peninsula

The Akamas peninsula is one of the most beautiful places in Cyprus. Our favorite one for sure.. Natura protected area, with wild beaches, warm waters, off road driving, gorges and newborn turtles! Lovely route that reaches the beach of Lara quite easily with a conventional car (you can also rent a special vehicle to get there) and top proposal from us the food at the canteen that you will find on the end of beach of Lara. After the Rock Restaurant just keep on driving and you ll get there. The best food  you’ve ever tasted with 10€ per person with salad and beer by the sea!

The mountain villages of Cyprus are the most incredible villages you ll ever see and we guarantee that! Unique villages with picturesque cobblestone streets and many ancient churches for you to explore. How to travel Italy by car – Rent a car or not?

Given these points what about using a car for your travel in Italy. The easiest way to travel in Italy is to explore the whole country from north to south or via versa by renting a car. It is an easy process since it is a very touristic country, really friendly to tourists. The options are many but of course we will recommend that you rent from an internationally recognized car company. Important notice before each car rental, read the fine print and check the car thoroughly before picking it up looking up for any damage.

Finally keep in mind that in some areas it is not advisable to travel by car such as the Cinque Terre area, for example (in our italian riviera blog post we share all info about how to move by train there), but it is certainly the ideal way if you want to visit many italian cities in a few days.

Although Italy is considered and not unfairly an expensive country for the tourists, there is a wide variety of travel packages on the internet. Great competition means fairly low prices. What we want to tell you is that with a good search you will definitely find a cheap package either it is for a group trip or a personalised trip made specially for you. The good thing about travel packages is that you save yourself time and effort especially if you are not yet a very experienced traveler. Prices vary and naturally they depend on the type of traveler you are. Certainly a luxury trip to Porto Fino with central lodge at the coast costs much more than staying outside the Cinque Terre area for example in La Spezia.

The Buda and the Pest

Budapest emerged from the union of the two regions that are located by the banks of the Danube River, with the Buda being met on the one side and the Pest on the other! The merging was made in 1873. Budapest is located 216 km southeast of Vienna, 545 km south of Warsaw, 443 km southeast of Prague and generally is a city that most travelers combine with a visit to Bratislava and Vienna!

From the to airport of Budapest to the city centre

Take the bus line 100 E or 200 E and you will find yourself easily in the center of Budapest with a ticket of 2-3 euros. We recommend the 100 E the one with the fewer stops and the last of which is the Deák Ferenc tér Central metro station locates right in the city center. The bus starts every 30 minutes and the journey lasts about 35 minutes! Tickets can be found just outside the airport on special machines outside terminal 2B or online!

Choose a central apartment or hotel as the city is ideal for walking. The accommodation, apart from the hostels, is a bit expensive we would say as we talk about a rather touristy city chosen by many tourists especially on the festive days of Christmas and New Year!

A perfect travel itinerary for Budapest

Whether you are visiting Budapest on Christmas time or any other time of the year, the itinerary remains similar. Below we have a nice proposal for your visit to the Budapest Christmas markets as well, as most people prefer to travel there on festive days and it is certain that they will spend several hours out on the streets and the squares with the wonderful and fragrant Christmas markets!

1 day

We begin our trip from the Pest side of Budapest on foot (depending on the area you ll choose to stay of course and based on the pins that you have already placed on the above points of interest)! We end up in Buda and the Buda Citadel on the Gellert Hill. After walking around the area, enjoying the unique panoramic view of Pest and Danube we had the first hot wine drink of the day before moving towards the castle! We are still in the Buda  side as we ascend either on foot (many steps),  you can take a cable car instead (7 euros) or arrange a tour that will tour you around the castle area and reach the Fishermans Bastion (19th century) from where you will admire the wonderful baroque style Parliament building! After tasting local delicacies in one of the following proposals we have the opportunity to take you to the squares and of course to the adorable festive Christmas markets with the most famous ones being the Vorosmarty and Basilica square.

Hop on and off bus in Budapest – Budapest Sightseeing Hop on off bus

If travelling with family (as we did), you can choose the hop on – off bus which will cost you only 33 euro for 3 days, including unlimited boat rides (afternoon too), a free walking tour, 2 routes to all points of interest and a night bus tour throughout the city!

Red Route runs from 9:00am – 4:00pm, every 30 minutes. Duration – 140 minutes. Yellow Route runs from 9:00am – 4:00pm, every 30 minutes. Duration – 80 minutes. Some of the tours stop at Margaret Island, but it’s advised to check the timetable upon arrival. Night tour runs from 8:00pm – 9:50pm, and lasts approximately 110 minutes. Meeting point – St Stephen’s Basilica (Red Route stop 1). you choose to do a night tour, you’ll have the chance to see this beautiful city under a blanket of darkness. The 1-hour panoramic night tour runs every night from the pick-up bus stop 19 on the red route. The departure time changes seasonally, for more information please check your bus ticket in Budapest. The free walking tour provides a tour of the Pest side of the city. The departure time is 11:00 AM from the pick-up point, which is the Big Bus customer service center, 3 Andrássy AvenuePlease note, that with your voucher you can start the tour at any of the Big Bus hop-on hop-off stops, not only at the meeting point (stop 1).

2 day

We continue our walk to the city’s top attractions and join a free walking tour to learn some local tips! A trip to Budapest is not completed without including a bath (or… more) in one of the many thermal baths of the city. Book your ticket in time or get ready for a long queue! On the festive days there are no online tickets! Szechenyi baths and Gellert Baths are the best known and most popular in town with affordable prices for an all-day entry ticket and use of the hot baths, either indoors or outdoors! There are showers, toilets and lockers to keep your things while you enjoying your bath! As the night falls we recommend a night bus ride in the city! The night city lights lights give Budapest a magic sense and a special charm that you will definitely love!

If you find yourself in Budapest on the New Year’s eve you can celebrate the new year and fireworks show in the hot baths for the price of 50-60 euro!

3 day

On the third day we start with the district around the Hungarian Parliament and of course we choose to walk on the banks of the Danube river where shortly after the chain Bridge we stop at the point where one of the most touching “monument ” was created and of course we are talking about the bronze shoes in honor of the tens of thousands Jews who lost their lives in 44′-45′. We continue with a coastal ride on tram 2A for some truly incredible views of Buda, the tram is located on the Pest side of the city. Our day will  finish with a night cruise on the Danube for a 9 euro ticket and a glass of hot Gluhhwein at only 1.5 euro! Also you can dine onboard for something more and taste local cheese and wine with a view of the enlightened Budapest which is equally, if not more, beautiful and charming than it is in the day!

If you travel to Budapest on Christmas time seek for the Christmas tram that is adorned and lit in a special way only for those festive days!

4 day

Today we will take a morning cruise on the Danube river, we will reach the Market hall  marketplace where we will spend some time tasting delicacies and buying souvenirs! For shopping enthusiasts we recommend a walk to the shopping center! To complete the trip to beautiful Budapest do not omit to attend an opera or concert show! We suggest the National Erkel Theatre with tickets starting from 3 euros for the balcony seats! We enjoyed the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven for only  6 euros for two persons!

Driving in Iceland

• The road network is in a good condition throughout the country.
• The driving is done from the right side of the road and at the roundabouts priority has the one that moves within the node.
• The streets near Reykjavik are usually with more than one lane per direction, while in the rest network it is mostly with one, without an emergency lane.
• Gas stations can be found in residential areas, so pay attention to secluded areas when traveling to north.
• The gas filling in the car is automatic and the payment is made mainly by credit-debit card.
• The outside cities speed limit is 90 miles an hour.

1. Do not stop outside demarcated parking!

During the journey you will come across beautiful landscapes that will make you wanna stop for short stops and take photographs. This needs special attention!! It has been common that tourists stop on the side of the road for photographing by putting themselves at risk from the passing cars and trucks. There are parking areas that can comfortably let you admire the scenery and rest safely simultaneously.

2. Night driving – weather condition

In most parts of the network there is no night lighting so you need to pay attention if you plan to drive during night or dark hours. Also because of the difficult weather conditions which are constantly changing it would be good to check the condition of the road network you are going to use. An easy way is by clicking here.

3. Is it necessary to rent a 4X4?

It is common for tourists to rent SUV-type vehicles with 2 or 4 wheel driving system. In addition to the comfort that they probably offer in terms of space and convenience, it is not necessary to rent one, since all known points of interest are accessible to all types of cars (Roads category F). Off road driving that is advantageous to an SUV-type car is prohibited anyway  so… Also the car rentals ensure that they wear suitable tires on all vehicles so that they can move in snow weather as well.

4. Beware the doors of the car!

In Iceland there are strong winds, so beware when you park. Be sure to park the vehicle against the wind, it may be difficult to open the door, but you will avoid injuries to you and damages to the car.

5. Do I need to pay tolls?

In the road network you will not find any toll points except one. It is the Vadlaheidi tunnel located near the northern town of Akureyri,  where if the weather is not good enoigh, we definitely advise you to pass through. In case you decide to pass the tunnel, see the instructions here, so that you can get a code and be charged during your transit with a smaller amount. We paid 1,500 ISK, while if it was paid by the rental office we would be charged 4,500 ISK.

6. How do I pass bridges?

Usually bridges are with one strip for both directions, so need to pay attention here too. Reduce speed when approaching them and if you see a car coming from the opposite side, stop and arrange who will pass first. Icelanders are a very polite people and usually provide the tourists priority.

Driving in Iceland is relatively safe and enjoyable, as long as you pay attention to the points we analyzed above. By driving you will discover beautiful destinations and taste a different travel experience. Beware, drive responsibly and enjoy!

A few words about Reykjavik

Its name means ‘ The Smoke Cove ‘, as the suffix ‘ Vic ‘ means a cove. Located along the coast of Iceland, Reykjavik is the capital and largest city in the country. One of the smallest cities in Europe, Reykjavik is also the northernmost capital of the world and is the government, economic and cultural hub of the country. Reykjavik is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean with shoreline trails stretching around the entire peninsula. There are many beautiful places to stop and admire the scenery on these coastal paths, which are very popular with cyclists, one of the most photographed spots is the impressive Sun Voyager-a huge steel sculpture that may resemble a Viking ship, but in fact, a dream ship and an ode to the sun.

All you need to see in Reykjavik

The following route is the one that we followed and we highly recommend it both in terms of time and convenience for your one-day staying there.

What impressed us in Reykjavik  the most are its colourful vibes, the pleasant mood of the residents, the woolen knitwear, the delicious fish soup, the unique reflections of the lake and the symbol of world peace in honor of Yoko Ono which is visible from all over the city and is located on a small island called Videy Island! Spend a day at least in the capital of Iceland and then embark on the ultimate adventure on the island of Ice and lava!

What is Blue Lagoon?

It is a natural lake of geothermal water that has been formed by underground waters which due to the volcanic activity and form of the whole Iceland are flowing and recycled every 40 hours . The lake is natural and its color is due to the reflection of the rays of the sun with the materials that make up the pond as is the Silica.

Two thousand meters within the earth, ocean water and freshwater converge in a tectonic realm of searing heat and extreme pressure, creating geothermal seawater. Drawn to the surface through geothermal extraction wells, the water emerges enriched with silica, algae, and minerals—the bioactive elements that endow this unique fluid with its healing, rejuvenating, nourishing abilities.

Where is the Blue lagoon located?

It is located on the southwest side of Iceland very close to the capital of Reykjavik and the airport of Κeflavic. The beneficial powers of geothermal seawater were first discovered in the early 1980s when local residents began to bathe in the serene blue lagoon that had formed in the lava field beside the Svartsengi Geothermal Resource Park. Some people came to the water for pleasure. Others came for healing. But all who came, left with sensations of profound revitalization.

• Book your tickets before your arrival, especially if you are traveling in summer
• Tickets are sold every hour from 8.00 in the morning but you can sit as long as you want inside
• There are two ticket types with the difference that in the most expensive one they provide bathrobe, slippers and second beverage
• A drink a towel and a mask of Silica is included in the price of a single comfort ticket

• Before you enter the lake, take a quick shower

Is a visit to the Blue Lagoon a must while on a trip in Iceland?

Of course it is! It is a unique and iconic natural formation, in a special country with peculiar nature and you are given the opportunity to pamper yourself with an eerie experience in beautiful clear blue waters of a lake surrounded by a lunar landscape while at the same time all the above is harmonized with the luxurious complex that has been created to make your visit there memorable. Iceland has a plethora of hot springs and lakes both organized and not as is Secret Lagoon (for the rest of them just make sure you are well informed because you need to pay attention with bacteria). In general, Iceland is a relatively expensive destination, and same goes with food. Of course there are inexpensive choices that you can afford easily and enable yourself to enjoy the local cuisine in an economical and low budget way.

Eating in a fast food

It is a quick and economical way to taste local Icelandic food and enjoy more neutral flavors, with local ingredients. This option will cost you 15 to €20 per person and you can find it in many places both in Reykjavik, and in smaller cities making road trips easier. We checked out some of them and present them to you:

• Babalu (fast food and cheap coffee with refill)
• Market Hlemmur Matholl (just for the experience or for fish soup)
• Icelandic street food shop with amazing seafood soup in Reykjavik (affordable prices)
• Hafnarburdin at Ηofn (try Icelandic hot dog or their classic burger) or the Pakkhus restaurant (pinched prices)
• Akureyri fish n chips
• There is of course the option of well-known fast food chains, such as Dominos Pizza for more safe, so to speak, options.

Shopping from Super Market

There are several supermarkets (Kronan, Metto, bonus) all over the island where in affordable prices you can get breakfast stuff, snacks, ready made sandwiches or even ready meals such as a chicken.

Cooking

Economical option, our favourite one, to regain some strength at the lowest price, and this is no other than to prepare yourself the meal of your dreams. You can purchase raw materials from supermarkets and start cooking. Usually all rooms, guesthouses and cotatges  have either private or common kitchens with all cooking necesities, where you can cook a delicious spaghetti with red sauce and seafood for example. We did it half the days of ur roadtrip  and we loved it, as we both saved money and enjoyed the whole experience of cooking in Iceland in a cottage house.

So, to conclude with…Is food in Iceland really expensive? We would say yes, but not in terms of the country’s prices in general. But it is for sure that there are ways to enjoy local icelandic flavors in cheaper ways, reducing the cost of travel. We hope that your appetite for your trip to Iceland got higher after that post…
