Today we will share with you our research on the official website and services of Aegean Airlines! The largest Greek airline by total number of passengers carried, by number of destinations served and by fleet size.

A few words about the company – Alliances – Awards – Fleet

Aegean is an airline company aiming to provide high quality safety and services on short and medium distance flights from 1999 to today, linking every corner of Greece and of course Greece with the whole world!! In 2003, it merged with Olympic Air, also known to the Greek audience, and has been a member of Star Alliance since 2010. Alliances and collaborations have a leading role in Aegean. Through Star Alliance and its partner airlines (such as Air Canada, Air Baltic, Brussels Airlines, Etihafd, Egyptair, SWISS, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Singapore Airlines etc.), it offers worldwide access, recognition and perfect travel experience.

122 destinations in 44 countries

Aegean receives international recognition and has been honored the Skytrax World Airline Awards for the eighth time as the Best Regional Airline in Europe. The Aegean fleet consists of 61 aircraft, of which 47 belong to the Airbus family and 14 are Q-series Bombardier.

The city of Athens constitutes a puzzle of smaller areas that compose the magic that characterizes this city. Antiquity, tradition and history meets modern, contemporary and future. Pedestrian streets, people, shops, taverns, colors, flavors, images … there are not enough words to describe each of these neighborhoods mentioned below. But it is for sure that each of them has something unique that magnetizes travellers and locals, invites you to discover them, provides security, its in walking distance as well as associated with the transportation and of course worth visiting! Enjoy!

1. Plaka – Anafiotika

Definetely the most alluring district of Athens! The best neighborhood to start your visit in Athens city! Check out my older post about Plaka, the “Neighborhood of the Gods”. It is named like this due to its proximity to the Acropolis and its many archaeological sites. The whole area is built on top of the residential areas of the ancient town of Athens. Plaka is the old historical neighborhood of Athens clustered around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis, incorporating labyrinthine streets and neoclassical architecture. The area of Plaka is one of the most attractive districts of Athens as there you can find amazing testaurants, cafes, music, friendly people and amazing small tourist shops to get your souvenirs. For the photolovers Plaka is an ideal inspirational place to take great and colourful photos!

2. Monastiraki – Thiseio

Monastiraki is a famous district of Athens that extends from the Monastiraki square at the end of Athinas street until Thiseio. It is one of the best places to buy just about anything at the Flea Market at Monastiraki especially on Sunday when some of the stores close and people bring tables and carpets and sell all kinds of stuff from junk to antiques. You will find clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and specialty stores. Also Monastiraki is a major tourist attraction in Athens which is named after Monastiraki Square, which in turn is named for the Church of Pantanassa that is located within the square. Thiseio is an area which has many cafés and cultural meeting pointsis surrounded by hills, heights and historical sites which are within a walking distance. The Ancient Agora, Stoa of Attalos, the Temple of Hephastus and Kerameikos Archaeological Museum can be entered from Thiseio while all others: the National Observatory, Acropolis, Philopappos Monument, Pnyx Hill which is considered the birthplace of Democracy and the Mount Lycabettus can be easily reached or viewed from Thiseio. The panoramic views of them and their natural surroundings from the Areopagus height are spectacular, especially by night. Try a romantic night walk under the athenian sky!

It is the historic center and the backbone of ancient Athens, where today takes place all political, economic and social life of the country. The historic center follows the modern trend of returning to the center which resulted in the transformation of the city center into a metropolitan district. The area is full of hotels, airbnbs, it hosts the largest part of entertainment and fun of the city. Accessibility is easy since there are three metro stops, one train stop, its the starting point of all three routes of trams, bus lines 130, 12 trolleybus lines. From Ermou street with the varius department stores to the Panathenaic Stadium, University and Monastiraki district, historic center is one of the most complete and commercial areas of the city. What about culture? 7 cinemas, 10 theaters and many artistic cafes which host cultural events. Uncountable bars, cafés, food places and clubs. Famous city pins are the Constitution Square, Kapnikarea church (square) , Karytsi Square, Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, Ermou Street. Dont forget to vitis Square Saint Irene the latest “talk of the town” and definetely check in at National Garden, Zappeion Hall, and Acropolis hill.

The district of Kerameikos consists of Gkazi, Metaxourgeio and Votanikos, and its a big area in the center of Athens that remains authentic, artistic and genuine. A charmingly poorly lit area, with narrow pedestrian streets, full of shops waiting for you to discover them. These areas have something real, something that reminds us of old neighborhoods while encounter modern industrial style perfectly and coexist harmoniously, giving life in this ‘degraded’ neighborhood. This renovated former industrial area hosts art galleries, museums, many cultural events throughout the year, cafes, bars, clubs and shops with Greek folk music. A trademark of the region post-industrial design associations.

5. Koukaki- Dourgouti

The district Koukakis (or just Koukaki) located on the southeastern side of the Filopappos Hill in Athens. It borders the regions of Petralona, Neos Kosmos (photos taken from Neos Kosmos – Dafni hill) and Acropolis. Imposing neoclassical next to sweetest houses. Alternative bars next to gourmet restaurants. Levantine taverns next to authentic Greek Myers. Groups with bicycles. Older couples catching table in the pedestrian zone and watch the world goes by. Tourists come from Dionysius Areopagite pedestrian street, neoclassical mansions beside the last remaining houses. Koukaki has two main pedestrian streets with plenty of cafes, bars, restaurants, grills etc. to serve residents and tourists from hotels around the Acropolis. In a walking distance to Koukaki you can visit Dourgouti area in Neos Kosmos district, which i trully love and suggest, but i will write about it in a special post dedicated to Dourgouti. Stay tuned!

You can walk the neighborhoods of Upper and Lower Petralona and discover numerous shops to eat and drink … low budgetly. Walk the Troon street, especially on summer days, you will be thrilled by the locals, the tastes, the smells and the music!

This resulted in the doubling of the population and the building of more open spaces. Despite the doubling of the municipality, Nea Smyrni is a region with great standards (layout, green, transport). Still, its trademark, the square remains a magnet and attracts a large proportion of young people of the southern suburbs and other central areas such as Kallithea, Koukaki and the Neos Kosmos.

Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s most iconic temple, No1 in Trip Advisor’s Annual Travellers’ choice awards and the ultimate expression of the majestic Khmer culture!

A monument – wonder that impresses both because of its dimensions (take a look at the map!) and the incredible details in its architecture. Visiting Cambodia and Siem Reap, and the visit to the World’s Heritage Temples, is a dream for every traveler, and not unfair! The Angkor temple complex, with Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument and world’s No1 in Trip Advisor for 2018, is undoubtedly one of the most amazing monuments to see and visit! It used to be a sacred place of many religions of the world, including Buddhism and Hinduism, as it was dedicated to Vishnu. This temple is a symbol for Cambodia, since it appears on the flag of the country since 1863 as well as the country’s main tourist attractions.

It is the greatest sanctuary, of any religion, in the world.

A few words about Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, the “great city”, was the ancient capital of Cambodia and was built by emperor Jayavarman VII on the ruins of an earlier city that was created by Udayadityavarman II and considered the home of the ancient gods. The Cambodian kings tried to improve the ancestors’ monuments in size, scale and symmetry, topping their efforts in Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious building. The temple is the heart and soul of Cambodia and a source of wild national pride.

Unlike other Angkor monuments, it has never been abandoned and has been almost constantly in use since it was built. Angkor Wat is the top expression of the Khmer culture at the height of their empire and a perfect example of their architecture. The fortified town of Angkor Thom was the capital of the ancient Khmer state in the 12th century.

cambodia angkor wat travel nonstop travellers

The visit to Angjkor Wat temple

Angkor Wat’s plan and the whole cluster are difficult to see when you walk through the monument because of their vastness. Its complexity and beauty attract and distract every traveler. From a distance Angkor Wat seems to be a giant mass of stone with a long road – a 200-meter trench leading to its center, but closely its surrounded by a series of towers, chambers, terraces and yards at different levels associated with stairwells ! Angkor Wat is famous for having over 3000 charming apsaras (celestial nymphs) engraved on its walls. Each of them is unique!

cambodia angkor wat travel nonstop travellers

The height of Angkor Wat from the ground to the top of the main tower is larger than 213 meters, The gallery with the columns defines the boundaries of the first and second levels. The third level supports five towers – four in the corners and one in the middle, and these are the most important architectural features of Angkor Wat. The stepped levels, one above the other, give the towers a conical shape. The total monument mimics a lotus bud, a symbol of purity !! Several architectural lines stand out on the profile of the monument. Angkor Wat’s smart design allows the view of all five towers from just some angles. They are not visible, for example, from the entrance. Many of the structures and courtyards are cross-shaped. This layout was used to link a part of the monument to another. Roofs were often laid to add height, length or dimension. A smaller copy of the central towers was repeated at the edge of two prominent areas. The great entrance road reappears on the other side of the monument! During the 20th century, there were works of conservation of this temple, which however were interrupted during the Cambodian civil war and the Khmer Rouge domination between 1970 and 1980.

cambodia angkor wat travel nonstop travellers

Angkor Wat’s visitor’s feeling

The general appearance of this miracle – temple leaves a sense of romance, beauty and strength! An impressive and grandiose monument, unforgettable, looks like something from outside our world has landed itself from the sky! Perhaps it is the most impressive sight in the world of monuments!

Other temples

Continuing the tour you can visit other (many many other!) temples, each of which has a special architecture and charm. Starting from Angkor Thom’s South Gate, you will see the famous Bayon temple with 54 towers with faces, the elephant garden where Emperor Jayavarman addressed to his people and the famous Ta Prohm, where huge tree roots literally embrace the temple! Maybe most of you already know him from the movie Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie!

But how can you make your suitcases lighter ??? Read below 5 simple steps and tips to help you travel light!

Step 1: Travel plan

What clothes you get depends on the needs of the trip you plan to do. So drawing up a plan for what to go is the first step. Basic questions may be, what are the sights you plan to visit? Will you go to beaches? Will you ascend to the mountains? Will you participate in an experience – event? This design will be a guide for you to choose the right wardrobe and take with you only the necessary clothes.

Step 2: List with clothes

This list will help you reduce the excess clothes that you often get without having to. For the selection of clothes, you should follow the following tips:

What if scenario … stop doing that!

Check weather to get proper clothes. In the event of cold weather, it would be good to have clothes that you can do layering.

Selecting clothes that are in neutral shades and can be combined with each other for all possible outfits you will use.

You do not have to get clothes for all the days, let’s not forget that the clothes are washed. Especially in areas where cleaning services are degradingly cheap, we do not even discuss it (see Southeast Asia).

Two pairs of shoes at most (one you wear), which will be suitable for many occasions.

Step 3: Avoid unnecessary weight

Limit care items or obtain travel size packages. For items like shampoos, soaps and so on, most hotels provide enough of them free of charge. The wallet on a diet, you do not have to carry the card from the gym. Put in your “smart” mobile tickets, books (use pocket size instead) and anything else you can to avoid extra weight. Good to buy souvenirs but in moderation, we should not forget that the memories and the experience of travel itself are the best!

Step 4: Choose a suitable bag

Choose a suitcase according to your needs. It is advisable to use a low weight suitcase which is as small as possible. And why taking a small suitcase since our issue is the weight? Because this will force you to take fewer things with you. Do not forget that the bigger the suitcase is, more is the useless stuff you will take with you. The issue of the dimensions of the suitcase will be discussed in another article. Here you can read our review for the Pakt Travel Backpack which is a good choice to start travelling light and more simple.

Step 5: Minimalist packing

Congrats! You are now in the last stage of packing light, but do not rush because we have the last tip to look out for: Avoid packing at the last minute (sounds typical? we do it too)! This causes stress and leads you to get things you do not need. Try separating your clothes into categories (beach, sports, etc.) and then folding them in roll, we usually do it and it is worth it. Do not take many handbags and bags.

You are ready for traveling light. You will be amazed how much stuff you can leave behind and you wont need it … And that’s because ??? .. Because we fill our suitcases with things only coz we think we need them. We do not need them for real… as Pareto would say from the clothes we will pack we will only use an 80%!

So…Did you learn how to lighten your luggage … ??? it’s time to try it !!

Good luck and good trips !!!

Spring is probably the most beautiful time of year! Definitely the most colourful and the most pleasant because we begin to dream of our summer holidays. But why waiting for Summer when we can have one weekend getaway in the beautiful Argosaronikos now? Let’s look at 4 nearby options from the port of Piraeus to start the excursions soon.

These are picturesque island destinations near Attica for you who love the sea, for you who love the Greek islands and the lovely sun!

Hydra

The most enchanting island of Argosaronikos, in my opinion, leaves all cars and anything that makes noise behind and allows you to enjoy your walks on the paved paths on foot or on a donkey. Walk through the narrow streets of the island, admire the beautifully preserved mansions, climb up the high alleys and enjoy great views! Those who dare to do your first dives those will be on the rocky slopes just 5 minutes from the harbor.

Agkistri

Agkistri is an island just 55 minutes from Piraeus, making it an excellent destination for small getaways. It can be quite small but has fantastic beaches while it is worth renting bikes to discover easily the island. For the lovers of free camping like us is the best choice and you will definitely love it!

Aegina

Aegina island is about 30 minutres away from Agkistri and it is another picturesque island known for its nuts! The two islands are so close that you can discover them together if you have 3 days at your disposal! Alternatively, especially owhen it come to Aegina, you can visit it on the same day, it has a very cheap ticket but caution on holidays as it is very likely that the tickets are sold oul so go ahead and book them!

Spetses

For our most cosmopolitan friends we recommend a more lifestyle island just as beautiful and picturesque as the previous ones and this is the island of Spetses! Full of historical alleys and picturesque houses that you will discover walking along a very beautiful route along the main harbor. Amongst other things, you will experience the island’s history at the Spetses Museum and the house of Bouboulina and you can visit many cute churches. Enjoy the experience of cycling at the harbor where you will also find no cars!

Regarding the budget you need, there are enough low budget options, starting an average price of 150 € a weekend for accommodation, transportation and food for two people (eg Aegina), or cheaper for the campers or even higher for the travelers who look for a more comfortable stay!

So why dont you tell us where would or will you start?

Walking in the last month of Spring … all of us pretty much begin to make plans for the summer that arrives! With the thermometer rising dangerously from day to day, we are ready for our first dives. But until you organize your summer holidays do you anticipate one (why not for more …) escapes even for a two days somewhere near Athens? For example, is it time for an excursion to the beautiful Saronic Gulf?

Surely most of you have heard about Hydra, surely some of you have already visited or plan to do so in the future. But what makes the island of Hydra so dear? What is it that makes her stand out? Let’s see together … Why in Hydra? Why…

Hydra is one of the most picturesque small Greek islands, while still remaining majestic and cosmopolitan (see Onassis, Callas, etc.)! It is no coincidence that the “Archontissa” of the Argosaronikos has been given to her!

Hydra is one of the most popular destinations given its proximity to the port of Piraeus, without losing the simplicity for which it stands! Its proximity makes it ideal for a short excursion even for a weekend!

In Hydra you can move to every corner of the island on foot! Okay, there is also a water taxi for anyone bored! To get to the last beach you will need about half an hour walking, hat, sunscreen and plenty of water! On the way do not miss to be photographed at the Red House (see Gorgones and Mages …)!

In Hydra as long as you stay on the island you will not hear a horn of a car or machine and that’s because … very simply not all kinds of wheeled vehicles are allowed! Hydra has been declared preserved!

In Hydra you will walk next to beautiful donkeys, a trademark of the harbor of Hydra and perhaps the most multi-photographed card postal of the island!

While walking around the narrow streets of the island you will discover fantastic craft shops with hand made creations and of course the store of internationally acclaimed designer Eleni Votsi who designed the Athens Olympic Medal and then decided to be her own design that will adorn the front view of all subsequent Olympic Games!

Hydra has a significant historical significance because of its great naval power during the 1821 Revolution and the role it played in its outcome. Her nautical force is taught by the Naval School that adorns the harbor! Just like the time back …

In Hydra a multitude of mansions, museums and monasteries make up a beautiful palette of colors that spreads generously in front of you when you hit your foot in the harbor, making it a unique source of inspiration for artists!

In Hydra you will swim in the blue sea overlooking its unique harbor with five minutes walk! All you have to do is lay a towel on the pier, from which you will enjoy cool dives!

Hydra hosts wonderful shops with delicious food and all budget. The more you walk, the more you discover and believe … there are small diamonds waiting to be discovered!

The rich tradition of the island and the diverse natural environment that is the paradise of the walker and the naturalist, as its mild climate favors hiking all year round! Over the course of time you will find plenty of events and events such as the mountain running race (for stronger players)!

For all of the above reasons, travelling to Hydra is a choice that does not require a special organization and panic! Besides, the summer is loading and we need to be a little more relaxed and spontaneous in our choices!

Bring a swimsuit, your smile and good mood!

Santorini, or Thira, is the top travel destination in Greece and among the most romantic travel destinations in Greek islands and the whole travelling world. Located in the Aegean Sea, in the Cyclades islands, Santorini was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world and what remains today is a submerged volcano and a caldera, as a complex of islands (Thira, Thirassia (or Thirassia), Aspronissi, Palea and Nea Kameni).

The volcano

This island’s complex was created precisely because of this intense volcanic activity of the earth! Twelve massive eruptions, one every 20,000 years or so, contributed to the creation of a caldera, destroying most of the volcano.

The last major explosion took place about 3,600 years ago (in the Minoan era), covering the three islands (Thira, Thirasia, Aspronissi) with ash, thus eliminating a prehistoric culture. The volcanic activity continued much more mildly, creating within Caldera the islands of Old and Nea Kameni. The island is thus a huge living geological museum, an ideal place to observe the processes of building and evolving a volcano.

Seeking romance

Santorini island is considered to be the most romantic travel destination in Greece. Loving couples are travelling every year to the sunny island to enjoy the famous sunset of Santorini. In fact, in recent years the island has established itself as a top travel destination for couples to hold their wedding ceremony or honeymoon.

Things to do in Santorini

Touring to the volcano, walking along the caldera path from Fira to Oia and shopping are the most popular activities on the island. Shops in Santorini island vary from small souvenir stores to international brands. Most beaches in Santorini are organized and have watersports centres with fun games. Diving centres also have their base in the beaches of Santorini, offering courses and diving trips to close islands, old wrecks and the volcano. Trekking paths are also available in the island.

A small tour of the villages of the island

The capital of the island is Fira. Built on the Caldera, 260 meters above sea level, with a splendid view of the blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the island of Nea Kameni. Fira along with Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia are spread out to the length of the Caldera enchanting the visitor, each in its own unique way. Other less famous but equally beautiful villages of the island worth visiting are Akrotiri and Mesa Vounos with their famous archaeological sites, the Tower, the Karterades, Emborios, Ammoudi, Finikia, Perissa, Perivolos, Megalohori , Kamari, Messaria and Monolithos. Some of them are more cosmopolitan, some quieter, others surrounded by huge vineyards, others dominate high castles with immense views of the Aegean, but they all have a special personality that will fascinate you.

The products of the land

Who does not know the unique local products of Santorini island? White eggplant, tomatoes, fava, capers and green cheese: all delicious ingredients of delicious local dishes that will be appreciated by lovers of good food! The island is also considered one of the country’s most organized wine tourism travel destinations.

Beaches

Discover volcanic beaches Let us not forget to mention the wonderful beaches of the island that could only be in harmony with its special volcanic character. Dive into beaches with black, red and white sand or colorful rocks, sculptured by the salt and wind rocks. A unique setting that you will not find anywhere else in Greece…

Santorini awaits you! It is certain that its intoxicating atmosphere where the blue of the Aegean blends with reddish rocks and the white of the houses will charm you! Let the energy flowing out of the volcanic landscape penetrate you and discover a special magic that really no image can capture.
